Case study

A US subscription print-delivery company

Magento to WooCommerce, with active subscriptions intact

A subscription delivery business needed a Magento to WooCommerce migration while its subscriptions were live, so any mistake would reach paying customers. We ran it in stages, tested subscription continuity before go-live and added a self-serve quote tool.

  • Zero disruption to active subscribers
  • 8K+ daily visits
  • Instant self-serve quotes

The challenge

A subscription delivery business was running on Magento, which carried high maintenance overhead and complex updates the business didn’t need. Its quoting process also didn’t match how it sells.

Moving platforms while subscriptions were live meant any mistake would reach paying customers. Its bulk ordering, with daily, weekly or monthly delivery across many publications, wasn’t covered by any off-the-shelf WooCommerce plugin.

What we did

  • Migrated the product catalogue, customer accounts and order history from Magento to WooCommerce.
  • Ran a staged migration with data validation and subscription-continuity testing before go-live.
  • Built a custom quote extension: customers choose publications, quantities and delivery frequency, and get an instant price.
  • Streamlined checkout from quote to payment.
  • Set up WordPress Multisite for central management, with email marketing connected for subscriber communications.

Key decisions

  • WooCommerce over a Magento rebuild. Lower maintenance and a better fit for the business at its scale.
  • Custom quoting, not plugin workarounds. The frequency-plus-bulk pricing model was too specific for an existing plugin.
  • Multisite for the network. A shared core with per-site settings, managed in one place.

What this delivered

The catalogue, customer accounts and order history moved from Magento to WooCommerce while subscriptions were live, with data validation and subscription-continuity testing before go-live. Customers now choose publications, quantities and delivery frequency and get an instant price, replacing calls to the sales team.
